During my years at Boards, we regularly reviewed the reels of up-and-coming directors for our Directors to Watch and First Boards Awards features. These directors were in the early stages of building their careers, newly signed to production companies and benefiting from the expertise and infrastructure of a professional shop. So, when I took on this search for unsigned directors, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Well, I actually expected to find quite a lot of dreck. I won’t comment on some of the lesser quality reels, but I will say that I was more than impressed by the calibre of work that was put forth by the so-called “unsigned”.
So now, after months and months of accepting submissions, collecting reels, watching films, downloading gigs of high res files and suffering through the torture of understanding NTSC vs. PAL for DVD authoring (I prefer to hide behind the warm, cozy of words rather than file specs), the Unsigned Directors reel is FINALLY complete and was presented at the Cíclope International Advertising Craft Festival earlier this month in Buenos Aires.
Of over 150 entries, this group of 23 made the final cut. And look out for a future post where I share some of the work that nearly made it and must be shared. Enjoy!

Love Does Grow on Trees was named one of the top five shorts at the Tribeca Film Festival by New York Magazine and acclaimed by Danny Boyle at the British Independent Film Awards.
[Editor's note: This film is waaaaay better and more adorable and touching than this trailer lets on. But at 11 minutes, it's not readily available online.]

Hi,
I’m an editor trying to move into directing and I wanted to know what I need to do to show my work in your site. Here is a link to some of my spots as a director. I also did the photography and editing:

Let me know how to proceed.
Thank you!
